Manchester Civic Society is a registered charity that, for 10 years now, since its formal launch on Tuesday 14 November 1995, has been ‘keeping a watch over the city’ and ‘fostering a sense of pride in Manchester’. We publish an eagerly awaited quarterly full colour magazine Manchester Forum and past issues are available on line. Copies of most issues are also available from the office at £1 each plus £2 for post and packing any number.

An important part of our work is the annual Awards Competition that we have held since 1998. The presentation lunch is a significant date on Manchester’s calendar. In addition we organise events, visits and lectures, do casework and look at planning and development matters, throughout the year. We ensured a better outcome to the Free Trade Hall development and were joint sponsors of the debate following the IRA bomb. In 2005, we hosted a meeting of architects and building consultants to initiate discussion on tall buildings. With three applications approved and over 20 more being prepared, is it not time to have a policy on where they should and should not be built? The Society welcomes tall buildings, so long as they are well designed and in the right place. We always need new members who want to participate in any of these areas.

In 2004, the Society opened its own office/shop in Castlefield, thanks to the generous support of Persimmon Homes. (Click here for a map)
We have now moved to a brand new location, thanks to the generosity and support of the Museum of Science and Industry.

All this is made possible only by generous support of our members, corporate members, advertisers and sponsors. You should join today.
